Boys & Girls Clubs to open two learning centers in Sandusky

Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio will open two ClubSmart Learning Centers — places where kids in digital-only education environments can get in-person help during the school day – on Monday.

ClubSmart Learning Centers will open at Osborne Elementary School, 920 W. Osborne St., Sandusky, and the newly renovated Sandusky Teen Center, 2112 Cleveland Road. The Osborne center will operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, while the teen center will be open from noon to 5 p.m.

There is no charge for the program but registration is required.

At ClubSmart Learning Centers, BGCNEO staff members help kids with their virtual learning, which will follow each school district’s curriculum. Club staff proctors help children complete their schoolwork and provide additional stress-relieving programs such as art, writing and athletics.

Former teacher Amy Skolnik, who has been serving as BGCNEO’s Erie County regional director, has been named to head the ClubSmart program and other learning center initiatives.

BGCNEO has opened 12 ClubSmart sites in Cuyahoga, Lorain and Summit counties and next week will launch three more, including the two in Sandusky. Another location in Cleveland will open in October.

Normally, Boys & Girls Clubs provide afterschool programming for kids ages 6-8, with a focus on academic success, healthy lifestyles and character development. The ClubSmart centers are BGCNEO’s response to youth who will benefit from in-person and technology help in doing schoolwork.

“While opening more ClubSmart Learning Centers will obviously put a strain on our resources, we know it is the right thing to do for our kids,” BGCNEO President and CEO Jeff Scott said. Visit www.bgcneo.org for more information about ClubSmart Learning Centers. Space is limited by building capacity thresholds and social distancing protocols. Once a ClubSmart Learning Center reaches capacity, registrants will be placed on a waiting list.
